Bangalore to Chikmagalur — The Complete Weekend Trip Guide
Everything you need to plan a weekend trip from Bangalore to Chikmagalur — the drive, the route, what to do, and how to make the most of two nights away.
Chikmagalur is one of the few weekend destinations from Bangalore that actually earns the journey. It is far enough that it feels like a proper escape — around 250 kilometres, five to six hours depending on your starting point — and different enough from the city that the transition feels complete the moment you enter the estate roads. # The Drive The most direct route from Bangalore is via NH75 — take the Tumkur Road, continue through Nelamangala, then head towards Hassan and on to Chikmagalur. The first two hours are highway driving — straightforward and fast if you leave before 7am to avoid Bangalore traffic. After Hassan, the road changes character. You are in coffee and spice country. The air is different. The pace drops. The final 40 kilometres into Chikmagalur through the estate roads is one of the better drives in Karnataka. ## Recommended Start Time Leave Bangalore by 5:30am–6am. This gets you past the city before traffic builds and puts you at your destination in time for a late lunch and the rest of the afternoon at leisure. If you leave later — say 9am — expect the drive to take seven or eight hours, and arrive tired rather than refreshed. # A Two-Night Itinerary ## Day One — Arrive, Settle, Rest Arrive by early afternoon. Check in, eat lunch, spend the rest of the day doing nothing in particular. This is not laziness — this is the point of Chikmagalur. Walk the estate if you like. Sit on the terrace. Drink coffee. Watch the mist come in over the hills at dusk. Have a bonfire in the evening. The temptation to plan activities on day one is real. Resist it. The transition from Bangalore to Chikmagalur takes a few hours to actually complete. ## Day Two — Explore This is your active day. Options within a reasonable drive from Nature Kingdom: - Mullayanagiri: Karnataka's highest peak at 1,930 metres. About 45 minutes from us. The sunrise trek starts at 5am. Even if you skip the trek, the viewpoint is worth the drive. - Baba Budangiri: Named after the Sufi saint Baba Budan, whose shrine sits at the peak. The views across the coffee-growing valleys are among the best in the region. - Jhari Falls: Around 30 kilometres from the property. Best visited in the morning. A waterfall surrounded by forest, quieter than the tourist circuit waterfalls. - Chikmagalur town: 25–30 kilometres away. Markets, coffee board outlets, local restaurants. Worth an hour if you want to pick up fresh ground coffee from the estates. Do not try to visit all of these in one day. Choose one or two and do them properly. ## Day Three — Head Back Check out by 11am. Leave by noon. This puts you back in Bangalore by early evening, avoiding the worst of the Sunday traffic. If you want to stop on the way back, Belur and Halebidu (the 12th-century Hoysala temples) are between Chikmagalur and Bangalore on the Hassan route — worth 90 minutes if you have not been. # What to Expect on the Road - Fuel: fill up in Hassan or Chikmagalur town. Petrol stations on the estate roads are scarce. - Food stops: Kamat Hotel on NH75 near Nelamangala is reliable. In Chikmagalur town, ask locals for the current favourite — it changes. - Google Maps vs reality: the route is well-mapped, but a few of the final kilometres to properties like ours involve narrower roads that Maps does not warn you about. We send specific directions once you book. # Booking Your Stay If you are coming from Bangalore for a weekend, book at least two weeks in advance — particularly for October to January when the property fills quickly. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we will confirm availability within two hours.
