Chikmagalur 2 Day Itinerary for a Perfect Weekend
A relaxed Chikmagalur 2 day itinerary for a weekend from Bangalore, with coffee estate walks, a sunrise peak, waterfalls and room to slow down.
Two days is enough for a proper Chikmagalur weekend if you accept that you will not see everything. This itinerary picks a sunrise peak, one waterfall, a coffee walk and two slow evenings, and leaves the rest for next time. It assumes you drive up from Bangalore on Friday evening or very early Saturday.
Distances here are approximate. Check them against a current map, because the roads are winding and slower than the numbers suggest.
Getting There
Bangalore to Chikmagalur is roughly 245 to 250 km and takes about 4.5 to 6 hours depending on your route and when you leave. The common routes run via Kunigal and Hassan, or via Nelamangala and Yediyur. Leaving Bangalore by 6:00 AM on Saturday, or the night before, gets you to the estates with the day still ahead of you.
Day 1: Arrive, Walk, Settle In
Late morning: Reach your stay and drop your bags. If you have arrived early and the room is not ready yet, most estates will let you leave luggage and start your day.
Afternoon: Take it easy. Do a coffee estate walk on or near your property, with a host or guide who can show you how the crop is grown, the pepper vines on the shade trees, and the birds that move through the canopy. If you have energy, drive out to Hirekolale Lake for a quiet hour by the water with Mullayanagiri in the distance.
Evening: Head back to your stay. This is bonfire time. Sit out as the temperature drops, eat a hot Malnad style dinner, and get to bed early, because tomorrow starts before dawn.
Day 2: Sunrise Peak, Waterfall, Drive Home
Pre dawn: Leave for Mullayanagiri in the dark. The road climbs most of the way to the top, then a short flight of steps takes you to the summit temple. Carry a jacket. The wind up there is cold even when the plains are warm. Watch the sun come up over the ranges, then come down before the day trippers arrive.
Mid morning: Stop for breakfast on the way back, either in town or at your stay. Check out is usually 11:00 AM, so pack up and settle the bill.
Late morning to midday: Drive to Jhari Falls. Park where the tar road ends and take a shared 4x4 jeep for the last steep stretch through the estates. Spend an hour at the falls, then head back to your vehicle.
Afternoon: If you want one more small stop, the Coffee Museum in Chikmagalur town is a quick, easy visit and a good way to close the loop on the estate walk from Day 1.
Late afternoon: Start the drive back to Bangalore. Aim to leave the district by 3:00 to 4:00 PM to be home at a reasonable hour.
A Slower Version
If you would rather not do the pre dawn peak run, swap it out. Spend Day 2 morning on a longer estate walk, a proper sit down breakfast, and the waterfall, then leave by early afternoon. You lose the summit view but gain a real rest, which for a lot of people is the point of the weekend.
What to Pack for Two Days
- A warm layer for the peak and the evenings
- Shoes with grip for the waterfall rocks and estate paths
- A rain shell if you are travelling between June and September
- Cash for jeep charges and small entry fees
- A power bank, since network and sockets can be scarce on the move
Where to Base Yourself
For a two day trip, staying on an estate a short drive from town keeps your driving down and your evenings quiet. Nature Kingdom sits among coffee plantations near Mallenahalli, close enough to reach Mullayanagiri before sunrise and Jhari Falls by late morning, far enough that the nights are silent. Every stay includes a bonfire, there is parking on site and power backup for monsoon days, and a BBQ can be arranged on request for an extra charge. Check in is from 12:00 PM and check out is 11:00 AM, which fits a Saturday arrival and Sunday departure neatly.
Two days in Chikmagalur goes fast. Pick a short list, start early on the one day that matters, and let the rest be slow.
