Chikmagalur 3 Day Itinerary: Coffee, Hills and Waterfalls

Three days is the sweet spot for Chikmagalur. You get a peak, a couple of waterfalls, an estate day and enough unstructured time that the trip actually feels like a break. This itinerary is built around two nights on a coffee estate, with drives kept short and an easy final morning before the road home.

Treat the distances as approximate and check them on a current map. Hill roads here take longer than the numbers imply.

Day 1: Arrive and Ease In

Morning: Drive from Bangalore, roughly 4.5 to 6 hours by the Kunigal and Hassan route or via Yediyur. Leave early to keep the afternoon.

Afternoon: Reach your estate stay and settle. Do a guided coffee plantation walk, either on the property or nearby. Learn how arabica and robusta are grown side by side, why the tall shade trees matter, and what the pepper vines climbing them are worth. Keep an eye out for Malabar hornbills and giant squirrels in the canopy.

Late afternoon: Drive to Hirekolale Lake or another quiet viewpoint near town for sunset.

Evening: Back to your stay for a bonfire and a Malnad style dinner. Early night.

Day 2: The Big Sightseeing Day

Pre dawn: Leave for Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka. Drive most of the way up, climb the final steps to the summit temple, and watch the sunrise. Carry a warm layer.

Morning: Come down and drive across to Baba Budangiri. Visit the Dattatreya cave shrine, walk a stretch of the open grassland ridges, and stop at Manikyadhara Falls, where a thin sheet of water comes off the rock.

Midday: Return towards town for a proper lunch and a short rest.

Afternoon: Drive to Jhari Falls. Park at the end of the tar road and take a shared 4x4 jeep up the steep last section through the estates. Spend an hour, then head back.

Evening: Another bonfire, or if your group wants it, arrange a BBQ in advance. This is your last night, so sit out late.

Day 3: One More Waterfall or a Temple Town, Then Home

You have two good options for the final morning. Pick one based on how much driving you want before the trip back to Bangalore.

Option A, waterfalls and hills: Drive towards Kemmangundi. Walk to Z Point for the valley view, then take a jeep down the rough track to Hebbe Falls, which drops in two stages through the forest. This is the fuller day and adds the most driving.

Option B, stone and history: Drive to Belur and Halebeedu on your way out. The Hoysala temples here hold some of the finest carving in India, rows of figures cut into soapstone, and they sit roughly in the direction of Bangalore, so you are not backtracking.

Either way, aim to be on the highway by early afternoon.

If You Have a Fourth Day

Add a slow morning with nothing planned, a longer estate walk, or a wildlife drive at Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary on the western edge of the district. A fourth day is what turns a good Chikmagalur trip into a restful one.
