Hebbe Falls Chikmagalur: A Guide for First Time Visitors

Hebbe Falls is the big one near Kemmangundi. The water comes down in two stages through dense forest, Dodda Hebbe, the larger drop, and Chikka Hebbe, the smaller one, into a pool where visitors wade and stand under the spray. Getting there is half the experience, because the last stretch is a rough jeep track that crosses streams and pushes through coffee estates and forest.

Where It Is

Hebbe Falls sits below Kemmangundi, an old hill station roughly 55 to 65 km from Chikmagalur town. The drive to Kemmangundi is scenic and winding, climbing through plantation and forest. From Kemmangundi itself, the falls are still some distance away down a track that private vehicles cannot use.

How to Reach the Falls

1. Drive to Kemmangundi from Chikmagalur or your estate stay. Any car handles this road, though it is slow.

2. At Kemmangundi, park and switch to a shared 4x4 jeep. This is the only way down to the falls. The track is rough, muddy in parts, with stream crossings, and the ride takes a while despite the short distance.

3. The jeep drops you near the falls. From there it is a short walk over rocks and through shallow water to reach the base.

Jeep charges are collected locally, usually per seat with a full vehicle. There may also be a forest or entry ticket. Carry cash, since there is no reliable way to pay digitally out here.

Best Time to Visit

• July to October: Fullest flow, thundering and loud, with the forest at its greenest. This is the classic time to see Hebbe, but heavy rain can close or restrict the track, and the jeep ride is at its muddiest. Expect leeches on the walk.
• November to January: Good flow easing gradually, comfortable weather, open track. A reliable window for first timers.
• February to May: Flow reduces. By late spring it is gentler, still pretty, but not the wall of water the monsoon delivers.

Always check locally before you set out in the monsoon, because access can change day to day.

Timings and How Long It Takes

Start early. Jeeps run through the day but demand is high on weekends and holidays, and you can lose an hour waiting for a seat. From Chikmagalur, budget most of a day: a couple of hours each way on the road, plus the jeep ride and time at the falls. Pairing Hebbe with Z Point and the Kemmangundi gardens makes a full, satisfying day out.

What to Carry

• Grippy footwear you do not mind getting wet
• A change of clothes and a towel
• A dry bag for phone, cash and keys
• A rain shell, and salt or leech socks in the monsoon
• Enough cash for jeeps, tickets and food
• Water and snacks, since options at the falls are limited

Safety Notes

• The rocks in and around the pool are slippery. Wade in slowly and do not climb the falls.
• After heavy rain, water levels rise fast. Listen to the jeep drivers and any forest staff.
• Keep children close to you in the water.
• Do not linger if the weather turns. The track gets harder to drive as it gets wetter.

Combining Hebbe with Kemmangundi

Most people make this a single trip. A sensible order is Kemmangundi gardens and Z Point for the morning views, lunch, then the jeep down to Hebbe in the afternoon. If you would rather beat the crowd at the falls, flip it and do Hebbe first thing.

Hebbe is a long day from anywhere, so a comfortable base to come back to matters.
