Jhari Falls Chikmagalur: How to Reach, Timings and Tips

Jhari Falls is a short, sharp adventure rather than a long trek. You drive out from Chikmagalur, hand your car over at a parking point, and bounce the last stretch up a rough track in a shared 4x4 jeep. At the end, water pours down a mossy rock face into a shallow pool where people stand and let it hit their shoulders. Locals also call it Buttermilk Falls for the white, churning look of the water.

Here is how to do it as a first timer.

Where It Is

Jhari Falls sits below the Baba Budangiri range, roughly 15 to 20 km from Chikmagalur town, in the estate country near Attigundi and Kaimara. The drive there winds through coffee plantations and small villages. Check the exact distance and route on a current map, since the last section is not always shown clearly.

How to Reach the Falls

1. Drive from Chikmagalur town or your estate stay towards Attigundi. The tar road is fine for any car.

2. At the designated parking point, leave your vehicle. Private cars and two wheelers are not allowed on the final track.

3. Take a shared 4x4 jeep for the last steep, rutted stretch. This is a genuine off road ride, slow and bumpy, through estate land and stream crossings. It takes only a few minutes but feels longer.

4. From where the jeep drops you, it is a short walk on foot, including some steps, down to the base of the falls.

Jeep charges are set locally and collected at the parking point, usually per seat with a full vehicle or a flat rate for a private jeep. Carry cash.

Best Time to Visit

• Late June to September: The falls are at full force, loud and white. This is the best time for the spectacle, but the track can close on the wettest days and the jeep ride gets muddy. Leeches are about on the walk down.
• October to December: A strong compromise. Good flow, open track, greener surroundings, more comfortable weather.
• January to May: Flow drops steadily. By peak summer it can be a thin curtain of water. The jeep ride and setting are still enjoyable, but do not expect a torrent.

Timings

Go in the morning. The jeeps run through the day but the falls get busy by late morning on weekends, and the light is better earlier. Aim to be at the parking point when the jeeps start running so you are ahead of the crowd. Allow two to three hours for the whole outing from town and back, more on a busy day when you may wait for a jeep.

What to Carry and Wear

• Footwear with grip. The rocks around the pool are slick with moss and spray.
• A change of clothes and a towel if you plan to get under the water.
• A dry bag or plastic cover for your phone and wallet.
• Cash for the jeep and any entry charge.
• A rain shell and, in the monsoon, salt or leech socks for the walk.

Safety Notes

• The rocks are slippery. Move slowly and do not climb above the main pool.
• After heavy rain the flow can surge without warning. Follow what the jeep drivers and local staff tell you.
• Keep children within reach near the water.
• The pool is shallow at the edges but uneven. Wade in carefully.

Combining It with Other Stops

Jhari works well as a half day trip paired with Baba Budangiri, since both are on the same side of the district. You could do the shrine and Manikyadhara Falls in the morning and Jhari afterwards, or the reverse.
