Mullayanagiri Trek Guide — Karnataka's Highest Peak
Mullayanagiri is Karnataka's highest peak at 1,930 metres. Here is everything you need to know to plan the trek — the route, the best time, what to carry, and what to expect at the top.
Mullayanagiri sits at 1,930 metres above sea level, making it the highest point in Karnataka. It is part of the Baba Budangiri range in the Western Ghats, about 45 kilometres from Chikmagalur town and roughly an hour from Nature Kingdom. The trek itself is not technically difficult — the main route is a well-worn path with stone steps for much of the ascent. What makes it worth doing is the landscape around it: the ridge views, the cloud cover at sunrise, and the sense of standing above the coffee estates that stretch to the horizon below. # The Route ## Main Route (Easiest) The starting point is the Mullayanagiri base camp parking area, which is accessible by car. From there, stone steps lead up the ridge to the peak. The ascent takes 45 minutes to an hour at a comfortable pace. This is the route most visitors take. It is well-marked and does not require a guide. ## Ridge Route (Longer, More Scenic) A longer route traverses the ridge connecting Mullayanagiri to Sarpadari and Baba Budangiri. This takes 4–6 hours and gives you a full day in the high-altitude landscape with views in both directions. This route is better with a local guide, particularly outside the October–February window when trail visibility can be limited. # Best Time to Trek ## October to February The best months. Clear skies, cold mornings, and the possibility of low cloud cover at sunrise that makes the ridge look otherworldly. Temperatures at the peak can drop to 8–10°C before dawn. Bring a warm layer. ## March to May Warmer but pleasant. Good visibility. The route is dry and accessible. Fewer trekkers than the peak season months. ## June to August The monsoon makes the stone steps slippery and the ridge trails muddy. The peak is often covered in mist — visibility can drop to a few metres. The trek is possible but not recommended without prior experience of monsoon trekking and proper waterproof footwear. # Sunrise Trek The reason most people make the early start. Leave by 4:30–5am. The drive from Nature Kingdom takes about an hour. You want to reach the peak by 6am. At sunrise on a clear morning, the cloud layer sits below the ridge. You watch the light change from dark blue to pink to gold across the coffee valleys below. On the best days, you can see peaks in the distance that you cannot identify. It is not guaranteed — some mornings are cloudy from below and above. But when it works, it is one of the better mornings you will have in Karnataka. # What to Carry - Water: at least 1.5 litres per person. There is no water source on the route. - Snacks: the base camp has a few vendors but bring something in case. - Warm layer: essential for sunrise treks, October to February. - Footwear: any closed shoe with grip is fine for the main route. Trail shoes for the ridge route. - Torch or phone flashlight: if you are arriving before dawn. - Rain gear: June to September. # Practical Details - Entry: there is a nominal entry fee at the base camp (usually ₹20–50 per person). Rates change; have cash. - Parking: available at the base camp. - Facilities: basic toilets and a few food stalls at the base camp. Nothing at the peak. - Distance from Nature Kingdom: approximately 45 kilometres, one hour by road. # After the Trek Come back down, eat breakfast, and let the rest of the day be slow. The morning will have been enough. If you are staying at Nature Kingdom, let us know the evening before if you plan a sunrise trek — we can arrange an early breakfast for when you return.
